Over the course of the summer, a trojan virus took over the entire district’s network and any computer connected to the network that wasn’t backed up needed to be wiped clean. Many staff members’ personal information such as amazon accounts and credit cards were hacked and every computer in the district had to be reimaged, meaning they had to be wiped clean of all of stored information. After wiping thousands of devices clean this summer, the routine summer house cleaning has been priority and technology has been a struggle to keep up.

“We have IT’s come out to the school every day,” director of IT services Randy Sharp said. “However, we only have five technicians to support seventeen sites, so they stay quite busy.”

With the bare minimum Information Technology staff, ITs for short, it is hard for every problem to get fixed. While the tech staff is busy fixing computers, it has been a struggle to keep up with routine clean up. This has amounted in even more problems occurring, such as printer malfunctions and computers becoming backlogged.

“In some cases the response time to the issues is quick while other times it requires a purchase of some kind and can take much longer to fix,” BHS campus Technology Integration Guide Caleb McCreary said. “It is a mixed bag, with some areas of tech like the new printers working well, and others still needing to be taken care of after several weeks.”

Through all of the frustration of the technological issues, the BISD IT staff has been working overtime, logging anywhere between 800 to 1000 hours in their malware recovery efforts. With the shortage of staff and the many challenges occurring with technology, the journey to get these printers and computers to function properly has made for a rough and frustrating start to the year. They are just now beginning to make some lead way, and hopefully the majority of these complications will soon be resolved.

“I’m not sure I would call the technology issues around the district a frustration,” Sharp said. “But it is always a challenge to serve the district with the resources we currently have at our disposal.”
